It's What's On Top

Even though I am not in one place for very long, I make it a point to return to Minnesota regularly. One of the reasons is to get my hair done

I have a dynamic duo at Juut in Edina who are truly second to none. Jessica masterfully handles my blonde and Haley is my go-to stylist. Recently, Haley took my long hair into a short, Mad Men-inspired bob...and I really love it. She's amazing!

When it comes to hair this season bigger is better. The long hair we have been seeing the last few years is now being shortened to collarbone length or shorter with lots of layers and texture. 

Face framing is in! Throw on a full bang to your cut for a dramatic look. To enhance you eyes and open up your face, shape create an open affect with adding layering around your face to show off you cheeks.  

 

If you have been in the bob phase for quit some time. Change it up a little with more layering and soft texture.

Use a curling iron to create texture. Keep a 40's inspired glam look in mind while curling. Big, soft curls.  Also try using a round brush to create volume at the crown. Put down the flat iron. You can always us it to smooth but no more burning your hair into a flat shapeless look. 

Color can always change up a look, too. Bold solid colors are in. No more partial foils. Try a tint which is an all over color or tint with balayage. Balayage is a beautiful way to get a natural looking color and you don't have to get it done as often. Balayage is done by your colorist creatively free handing each highlighted piece in you hair.

Jammie Fashion

Since I've been laid up for the past few days, I thought I'd dedicate today's post to pajama fashion! I am a sucker for a great PJ's myself and here are some of my favorite cold-weather essentials. 

Cami & Pant Set - Wendy Glez makes the softest, yummiest pajamas. They're certainly a splurge, but are comfy cozy. This set is from Blue Fly and on sale for $96 for both pieces.

While I love lounging in these sets, they're not ideal for actually sleeping. Your arms can get cold unless you have the covers pulled way up and the pants can get tangly around your legs. 

Long-Sleeve Nightie - It's hard to not look like a granny in one of these, so please be careful when choosing. This one from Victoria's Secret is great because it's just like a simple t-shirt with a fitted nightie cut. Plus they're 2 for $40. 

These are great for sleeping, especially if you choose a shorter one, because they keep your arms warm and there's nothing to get bunchy around your legs. 

 

Fleece Pants and Long-Sleeved T - Absolutely the least sexy of the bunch, but truly practical and snuggly. Walmart has the most ridiculously lush fleece pants for $9...OMG. Throw in the t for $8. 

Romper - Yes, this is totally impractical for tundra-like weather, but I love it! This knit romper is from Forever 21 and a bargain at $14.80. Plus it comes in pink and ivory. 
 

Slippers and Slipper Socks - An absolute must! My current ones are entirely too skanky for public display, but I'd like a pair or two of these ones. 

These classic Uggs are on the top of my list. Saks has this adorable baby pink color for $100. 

I love the look of these slipper socks. I don't have a pair yet, but I should! I may not be able to resist these ones with rhinestones from Victoria's Secret at $19.50. 

Jewelry - What? Jewelry? So I'm not a personal fan of wearing jewelry to bed, but remember that Carrie Bradshaw does! It's hard to see in this photo, but remember the huge strand of pearls that she wears to bed with Big? Fabulous!

Sorry, dudes, for the lack of posts. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you already know by now that I've been sick, sick, sick with some wicked food poisoning.

Give Her The Boot

The first fashionable person I ever knew was Heidi Broberg. She was one of those early catholic school kids who finally graced us with her presence at public school. I feel in love with her (and her style) immediately. I didn't know anyone else who could wear navy blue with such zip! 

While I was envious of her Jordache jeans and other fashionable wears, Heidi and I became great friends and stayed close through the years. You're going to love her thoughts today on boots, boots, boots!

Currently Heidi is the Art Director at Go East Design where her clients are fortunate enough to have her faboosh design skills working for them. 

No sooner than my September Vogue arrived in the mailbox, I've been eyeing some of this season's beauties. Here are a few of my favorites styles I can't wait to rock out.In Minnesota, I like to think there are 2 seasons: flip-flops and boots. Call me crazy, but I'm never too sad to see summer go because I LOVE boots. Boots are pretty much a necessity here, given our cold and wet winters. That said, style beats practicality any day. 

Booties

I'm embracing the 80s & 90s and loving the booties. I even like them with boyfriend jeans and anklet socks. I think we'll see these for a few winters, so go ahead, invest in a good pair... or two.

Motorcycle

These never go out of style, so keep 'em black and basic. The more scuffs the better. Who needs a bike, its all in the attitude. (Though, I wish I had a bike.)

Knee-high

With skinny jeans, I prefer flat knee-highs, but there is plenty of love for ones with a sky-high or chunky heel.

Weather

For days when you just can't bear to ruin your favorite pair of suede boots because there is two inches of ice underneath the six inches of fresh white stuff. Or, for days when you want to play in it.

Winter can be cold and long, but if you dress for it, can surely make you smile. Thanks, Sara, for letting me share a few of my favorite looks.

Applesaucey Sauce

• 6 Honeycrisp apples peeled, cored, and quartered apples. (or you can use another cooking apple like Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, Jonathan, Mcintosh, or Gravenstein)

• 4 strips of lemon peel - use a vegetable peeler to strip 4 lengths
• Juice of one lemon, about 3-4 Tbsp
• 1 T ground cinnamon
• 1/2 cup  brown sugar
• 1 cup water
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• Optional: a shake each of ground cloves, allspice, and ginger

Put all the ingredients in to a large pot and bring to a boil. 

Lower heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes. 

Remove from heat and remove lemon peel. Mash to your liking. 

Freezes beautifully!

Not Really My Apparel

So...I tried. I really did. But I could not find anything in the American Apparel store that compelled me to open my wallet and buy it. 

I tried on at least six dresses, three shirts, and two vests. Nothing. 

Part of the issue is that the clothes are made for pre-pubescent teenagers. Have some boobs going on? Don't even bother trying on the dresses. 

Thanks to my sista, Joie, I knew about Le Sac dress and tried it on. I love the versatility of it, but it's just not made for a woman. If I were back in seventh grade, I could have rocked this!
