As an aspiring-vegan, eggs are a source of frustration for me. Chickens and chicks are incredibly mistreated...even your "free-range" labeled eggs. You can read all about the sick details here, here, and here (be warned...this is cruel and graphic!).
Currently we are getting eggs from a local, small organic farmer. We actually visit him and his little flock of free range chickens. In fact, the chickens are kind of like little friends. They will let you pick them up and they make this crazy little purr when they're being held.
The only bummer of local, organic, cruelty-free eggs is that they're dirty! I guess it's a very small price to pay.
I'm doing my best to stay away from eggs from the grocery store and restaurants. Consider it yourself...for the chicks and chickens!
